The Avengers review

The Hollywood summer blockbuster season has kicked off with a hiss and roar with the arrival of the hugely-hyped marvel mash-up The Avengers into cinemas globally.

Bringing the marvel comics superhero team to the big screen was a no-brainer, and while Hollywood’s mixed it up with the team members a little, the spirit of The Avengers remains true - and in all their big screen glory they really are just a tonne of fun.

All your favorites are back and apart from the hulk they’re as you remember them, from Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man to Liam Hemsworth’s Thor to Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow.

Throw in new action hero de jour Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, giving Katniss a run for her Hunger Games money with his archery skills, plus new Hulk Mark Ruffalo and The Avengers have never looked so hot.

So the story?

As hinted off the back of the recent Thor and Iron Man outings, the bad space god Loki is on a mission to rain outer space hell and brimstone upon the Earth.

The only hope planets Earth has, of course, are our superheroes - if Nick Fury and his mysterious super spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D can rally them in time and stop the in-fighting.

The final showdown is a fittingly epic finale to what’s essentially a sleek stylish popcorn superhero blockbuster for all ages, and impossible to hate.

Four stars ****
